Nine years of sustained momentum for global fur sales

The spectre of a luxury slowdown has not affected global fur sales, which have shown an increase for the ninth consecutive year. The International Fur Trade Federation’s latest annual survey reveals that consumers spent US$15.02 billion on fur and fur accessories in 2007, up by 11.34% on the previous year.

“Fur is more relevant than ever to luxury brands”, commented International Fur Trade Federation Chairman Andreas Lenhart. “The really strong designer brands are uncompromising in their dedication to quality and luxury. Fur delivers on that brand promise for these design houses.”

This view has been corroborated by the increase in fur on the world’s catwalks during the autumn winter 2008-2009 shows.

Fur is one of the most traditional and exclusive luxury fabrics, and virtually impossible to fake well. It offers the consumer a product which is stunningly beautiful, attention grabbing and by its very nature aspirational luxury, the perfect combination. “It is little wonder that fur sales have remained strong”, says Mr Lenhart.

Global fur sales up for the 8th consecutive year

19 March 2007

The annual IFTF survey shows that fashion-savvy consumers invested a massive USD 13.49 billion in fur for their wardrobes in 2006.

The latest data, covering retail sales of full fur garments, trim and accessories for the 2005/06 season, shows a 5.6 per cent increase on the previous year’s results.

According to IFTF, industry analysts point to a number of key trends driving the increase in sales figures:

* More and more consumers are being drawn to the versatility and luxury
of modern fur garments, which are lightweight as a result of new

manufacturing techniques but also provide warmth and style.
(* Mais e mais consumidores estão  sendo atraidas pela versatilidade e luxo dos modernos artigos com peles,...)

* Leading designers continue to show exciting and innovative fur creations
on the catwalk, as seen during the recent Autumn Winter Ready-to-Wear
2007-08 collections.

* The price of raw fur skins increased during this period. This is reflected in
the higher retail price, which consumers have readily accepted. (* O preço das peles aumentaram durante este período.)

* East European, Russian and Far Eastern markets have continued to grow. (* No Leste Europeu, Russia e Extremo Oriente os negócios continuam crescendo.)

“Full fur continues to be very popular, but we are also witnessing a major trend for more casual fur pieces and accessories to suit every occasion, as we saw recently at the Ready-to-Wear collections where fur trim was very prominent,” said IFTF Chairman Andreas Lenhart.

Sales up as consumers choose fur

Global fur sales have increased for the seventh consecutive year, reaching a figure of US$ 12.77 billion according to the International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF).

The latest statistics, covering retail sales of full fur garments, trim and accessories for 2005, show a 9.1% increase on the previous year`s results.

The survey has been carried out annually by the IFTF within its membership since 1998.

"We have just witnessed an incredible month of designers showing fur in Autumn/Winter collections on the international catwalks, and this reflects the continuing strong consumer demand for our product," said IFTF Chairman, Mr Andreas Lenhart.

"Fur is not a `here-today-gone-tomorrow` fashion - it is an integral part of a winter wardrobe.  Innovative new design techniques mean that it is light and versatile so fits with today`s lifestyle but provides the warmth and style that the consumer is looking for."

Demand for fur on the increase as sales continue to rise

Annual results announced today by The International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF) show global retail sales of fur garments have increased by 10.8%, to a figure approaching US$ 11 billion.

This significant growth reflects the growing consumer demand for fur that has been apparent for the past four years since IFTF started to compile the annual results.

IFTF Chairman, Andreas Lenhart, said, "The last couple of years have been tough, with major economic turbulence following the events of September 11th and the burst bubble of the internet economy. Taking this into consideration, the fur trade has done remarkably well.

"New design techniques mean that fur is light and versatile and can be worn as a wide variety of styles and colours - either as full fur or as a combination garment. Fur remains big with international designers and is set to continue as an integral part of fashion.

"As a profession, we continue to respond to consumer needs. As part of this, we have recently agreed upon a new European labelling scheme that will help the customer to know exactly what type of fur they are buying at the point of purchase."

Notes to editors:

1. The IFTF figures cover retail sales through traditional fur retail outlets. They do not include fur sold through fashion houses.

2. IFTF is an independent federation of 33 national fur trade associations and organisations representing 27 countries.
